______

The Alma jacket can be sewn in lots of different fabrics. It will be wonderful sewn in a light-weight, drapey fabric for summer days at the beach - but also when lined and sewn in heavy fabric for a chilly autumn. Alma can also be a gorgeous jacket for the office or a cosy jacket to wear curled up on the couch.

Alma has two lengths: short and long. And you can choose to sew it fully lined or unlined. The sewing instructions will guide you through all the options and sewing techniques.

Alma can be sewn with 3/4- or long sleeves. You can sew them lined, hemmed or with a binding. The front pockets are optional, but they make a great addition to your jacket. You can line, hem or sew them with a binding.

The Alma jacket is open in the front, but you’ve also got two options to close the jacket: sew a waistband that goes all round the jacket through loops in the side seams; or two narrow bands that make front ties.

Skill level: 2/3 (Level guide).

YOU WILL NEED:

- Outer fabric, woven fabric with little or no stretch. Very light to medium heavy weight (up to 340 gr/m2). Suggestions: cotton, poplin, linen, quilted fabric, teddy, seersucker, double gauze, viscose, denim, chambray, bouclé, wool, tweed, jacquard. Note! Most fabrics shrink with the first wash, so prewash all fabrics before cutting. You can also use knit fabrics, but consider sizing down (see the sewing instructions).

- Lining fabric, woven fabric with little or no stretch. Very light to medium weight. Don’t combine a weighty lining fabric with a weighty outer fabric. At least one of the fabrics should be lighter. See my suggestions on the next page. You can choose a shiny lining fabric so that the jacket slides on/off easily.

- Binding, cut your own with the help of the pattern in a light-weight woven fabric, or use pre-cut binding. Only needed if you choose to sew pockets, sleeves and/or hem with binding.

- Fusible interfacing, for more stability in the collar, optional. Not recommended if your collar fabric is medium or medium heavy weight. If you choose to use an interfacing, choose one that’s lighter than the fabric.

USEFUL TO HAVE:

Tape measure, fabric scissors, pins/clips, steam iron, sewing machine with coordinating polyester thread. I recommend using a walking foot instead of the usual presser foot if your fabrics are heavy and/or if you’re lining the jacket.

Suitable needle for your fabric: Universal needle, approx. size 70 for very light fabrics, 80 for light fabrics, 90 for medium weight fabrics and 100 for heavy fabrics. Use a microtex needle for very light and fine fabrics such as silk and viscose. If you’ve chosen knit fabrics, use a stretch needle.

See the size guide among the pictures on this page.

Choose size based on your body measurements, primarily bust and waist width. Alma has a loose fit and you probably don’t have to mix sizes if your measurements point to different sizes.

However, if you’re sewing the long jacket you should also consider your hip width. If your hip measurement is larger than what it is for the size you’ve chosen, then I recommend to mix sizes and grade out towards the larger size at the side seam. See an instruction on mixing sizes on my website.
